Shenanigans & Tomfoolery

Three more pages from my 2009 sketchbook from around January-ish.

I like drawing old people for some reason. I find that they lend themselves to be more expressive and moody than a young person would. It’s probably the wrinkles. The legs of the woman in the middle are totally out of place, they should be be starting a little higher along the torso. It bothers the hell out of me and I like to think that I wouldn’t make that kind of mistake today.

I vaguely remember the woman on the left being inspired by some girl I saw in the subway. I had some fun with the little girl in the bottom right. It’s not my usual kind of drawing but every once in a while I’ll force myself to draw a little girl or a little boy and just see what happens. Of course, they usually end up being angry about something (like most of my stuff) but they still end up being somewhat playful and not too serious. I could’ve done a lot better with the long-faced alien on the top right.

It was somewhere around this point in my sketchbook that I decided to force myself to draw mechanical stuff every couple pages just because it’s something I’m not particularly comfortable with. I’ve become rather good at drawing the human figure and monsters and whatnot but ask me to draw a robot and it just ends up looking kinda lame. That’s the reasoning behind me drawing those valves and pipes in the top right corner of the page. I like the monster in the bottom right (I’m pretty sure I based those teeth off something I had seen at that time) but the girl in the middle of the page looks really weird and unnatural.

I think I’ll dust off my Wacom tablet and do some sketches on it for my next post.

I also want to do a self-portrait for the about page but that’s further down the line.
