Krypto vs. Dex-Star
It was revealed at the San Diego Comic-Con that Krypto the Superdog would be fighting Red Lantern Dex-Star (or Rage Cat as he’s affectionately known around the web) in Blackest Night. I don’t think I’ve seen a drawing of this most perfect match-up yet so I took it upon myself to give it a shot. I also wanted something fun to draw as a break from my current work on the pitch (which is progressing nicely) and thought Krypto vs. Dex-Star could be fun to put on paper.
And it was, I was smiling the entire time.
More comments after the break.
Dex-Star wasn’t too much of a problem. Once I got references for the costume and the face (“angry cat” in Google, bless the internet) the figure itself wasn’t much of a problem. I was able to take some liberties because, as I found out, Dex-Star isn’t an actual cat per se. He’s more of a humanoid animal in the vein of Green Lanterns Ch’p or B’dg (you can Google those yourself) so I wasn’t too worried on making him look exactly like a cat.
Krypto is a dog through and through though so I was a bit more conscious about a dog’s anatomy when it came to him. Not too much though, I didn’t want to spoil the fun of it by obsessing too much over anatomy, specially considering that I’ve drawn dogs probably three times in my entire life.
I was very tempted to color in a little yellow for Krypto and blue for Dex-Star but I ultimately let that go. Maybe if either of them didn’t have so much red (which is what I’m using for laying out stuff right now) in their costumes anyway I would’ve gone for it. As it stands, I think the red alone works just fine.
