Disney to acquire Marvel Entertainment.

disney-marvel

Very interesting stuff.

It doesn't seem that strange when to take into consideration that DC is owned by Warner though, i.e. another comic book company owned by another large conglomerate.

Maybe we'll get a Disney quality animated film with Marvel characters? In 2D if we're lucky? Because the direct to DVD animated line from Marvel doesn't really do it for me (DC's direct to DVD stuff is better).

We're probably just going to see Spider-Man in Disneyland now though.

Sigh.

Sketchbook Update – 8/28/09

sktchbk-09

Time for another one of these.

Truth is, I haven't been drawing a lot on my sketchbook lately. Most of my drawing time is spent on the pitch I'm working on. I did, however, impose a sort of rule upon myself which is to draw in my sketchbook for at least an hour before I do anything else that is drawing-related. I'm only a little over halfway done with it and August is nearly over so I need to start filling up those pages if I'm to finish before it the end of  the year.

Anyway, here's five pages from still an early part of this sketchbook.

The remaining four after the break.

A “District 9″ review.

District 9

I'm a huge fan of aliens and science fiction so I was immediately interested in director Neill Blomkamp's District 9 when I saw its first trailer (which I've embedded at the end of this post) many months ago. The trailer itself was so vague that I didn't really know what the movie was about which naturally made me even more curious. Plus, I can't say no to a great spaceship design. I kept the movie in the back of my head and made no effort to follow up on it online, always knowing that I'd see it upon release. Well, the movie is out, and I saw it (after many failed attempts) and here's what  I think about it.

Potential spoilers after the break.

Mario vs. Bowser: Redux

Mario vs. Bowser

The preceding picture has been sitting in the "Color" section of this site for a while now and was done at least a couple of years ago but I felt like highlighting it on the front page for a couple of reasons.

Learn of how I made it to Joystiq after the break!

“About” page levels up!

A self-portrait

I finally updated the "About" page.

I just threw the most important stuff about me on there and I drew a self-portrait for it like I said I wanted to a while back.

I probably haven't done a self-portrait since college so it was fun. I just went in roughly and lightly with a blue pencil and then just regular graphite all the way. I cheated though and when I brought it into Photoshop for cropping and contrast, I put the reference picture in a layer underneath the drawing and used meshes to fix the stuff that was off. I ultimately left the original photograph underneath it and changed the pencil layer mode to Linear Burn for the finished result which looks nicer than just the pencilwork, I think.

The "About" page is really just for my contact info, which is really just my e-mail address, which isn't anywhere else on the site.

I also added a few plugins to hopefully raise awareness of this site so that maybe, just maybe, I can get 3 regular readers instead of 2.

I’d kill for a Team Fortress 2 animated movie.

tf2_characters-2

If you’ve seen the Team Fortress 2 “Meet the Spy" video that I posted a while back or if you've been lucky enough to stumble upon any of the other "Meet the Team" videos that developer Valve has released in the last couple years (and if you haven't, there's a nice little YouTube playlist at the end of this post with all of them) then you know that these are high quality bits of entertainment. Ultimately though, they are nothing but short pieces of advertisement for a video game in a genre (team-based multiplayer) that doesn't really lend itself to storytelling. I've watched these videos over and over and enjoy every single aspect of them and I would just absolutely love it if these guys could work this franchise into a feature film.

More, as usual, after the break.

Absolute Green Lantern: Rebirth next year.

absolute-green-lantern-rebirth-johns-van-sciver

It looks like Green Lantern: Rebirth is getting the Absolute treatment next year.

For many reasons (shelf space and price chief amongst them) I've been very judicious as to which books I buy in the oversized Absolute format. So far, Watchmen has been my one and only Absolute purchase, though I've considered getting Absolute Kingdom Come many times also (and hope to someday). Now I can add a possible third title to that list.

Green Lantern: Rebirth is a very special book to me that managed to do two things: 1) It introduced me to the larger Green Lantern mythology that I had only experienced peripherally up until that point and 2) It made me a fan of both Geoff Johns and Ethan Van Sciver.

I've had the regular hardcover of Rebirth for some time and I've read it dozens and dozens of times. Will I still buy Absolute Green Lantern: Rebirth?

You bet your ass.

Old stuff from college.

Illustration assignment 1

I was looking for a file on my computer and I stumbled upon the following set of 3 images that I did, I believe, in an Illustration class back in college. It's been like four or five years (more even?) since I did it but I think it still holds up rather well, probably because I followed my reference very closely. I figured I'd throw it on here since I don't have a lot of colored stuff anyway.

The next two pictures, photo references used and comments after the break.
