Mario vs. Bowser: Redux

The preceding picture has been sitting in the "Color" section of this site for a while now and was done at least a couple of years ago but I felt like highlighting it on the front page for a couple of reasons.

One of the reasons why I wanted to bring this drawing back up here is because of the e-history behind it. See, that Mario vs. Bowser drawing actually made it to Joystiq's front page.

Or rather, a version of it did.

Story goes something like this: I used to post regularly in the Neo-geo.com forums and, every once in a while, I would post some of my drawings there. After I finished inking this particular drawing, I threw it on there, got some feedback and called it a day. A few days later I get someone on the forums saying "hey, it's pretty cool that you made it to Joystiq" much to my utter surprise and complete dismay. Apparently, somebody had taken my drawing, posted it in another forum where somebody else saw it, then this person colored it (terribly), threw it on Digg where it got a few thousand hits and the rest is history.

I guess a normal person would appreciate the larger audience, even if it lasts for only a few minutes, but I remember being so upset over the fact that the coloring was so poor, not to mention the fact that whoever colored it got the credit and not me (though that was later corrected) that I quickly went in and colored it myself leading to the picture above.

It's weird looking at this picture now. I just see it as the cause of a bunch of e-grievances. It's not my best work to be honest. It's perhaps over-rendered and I was never truly happy with my own coloring either (though it's still way better than that other guy's).

Anyway, the other reason why I wanted to post about this picture is because I just made this cool animated GIF showing some of the steps in getting this picture done:

If anything, I really liked Joystiq's description of my drawing.
