An oldie: Mega Man and Bosses
This is another piece I did a couple years ago. It’s been sitting in the color section of this site (much like Mario vs. Bowser did) but being that it’s a completed piece and that I haven’t really worked on anything other than my comic pitch, I thought it’d throw it on the front page.
More words and progress animation after the break.
Like I said, it’s been a while since I did this so I can’t remember where I got the idea to place Megaman in front of all the boss characters from one of his games. I do remember however, that I initially wanted to draw him against the bosses of Megaman 2, which is widely considered the best Mega Man game. The reason why I went with the Megaman 1 villains was quite simple: Megaman 1 had six bosses whereas Mega Man 2 had eight. I wanted to have everybody but Megaman using their powers in some way or form (which was difficult in and of itself because all the Mega Man 1 bosses do is throw crap at you) and, at the time, found the prospect of putting 9 characters in a single page to be rather intimidating so I just said “screw it” and went with Mega Man 1.
It came out OK, I suppose. I like that the colors are bright and cheery and, after looking at it recently, I was sure I had done it in Corel Painter because of the brush work but I still have the PSD files so I guess it was done in Photoshop. I remember thinking about drawing it my own style but the characters ultimately came out looking much like they do originally. I do like it but I just think it’s very vanilla and nothing really makes it stand out.
I’m thinking of tackling Mega Man 2 in the same vein as this one in the future.
I’m definitely up to the challenge now.
