Shenanigans & Tomfoolery

Fresh from the oven.

The reasoning behind me doing this picture is very simple:

Step 1: Draw Mario brutally fighting Sonic.
Step 2: ???
Step 3: Profit.

South Park references aside, I chose to do this picture because my Mario vs. Bowser piece gets me a lot of hits and, since I’m always happy to get my name out there, I thought a Mario vs. Sonic fight might net me similar results. So it’s different than my previous stuff in that I usually think of something cool I want to draw and go with it whereas this time it was more “business” oriented, so to speak.

I had a clear idea of what I wanted this drawing to look like and was a little worried that because of the more physical nature of the drawing, with both characters grabbing and pulling away from each other, I might not be able to make it look natural but I did a pretty good job at it, I think. I usually struggle with these kind of drawings but there’s more leeway when the characters have cartoons proportions, I suppose.

In coloring this I went with, once again, my preferred method of hard edged shading with gradients layered on top via Photoshop. I almost added motion blur in a couple of spots but I ultimately decided against it. The fact that both characters overlap in different places made working with layers a little more complicated than usual compared to when I work with a clear foreground, middleground and background but, again, nothing major. As for the orange background, well, since I’m still too lazy to draw and color a proper background (I promise I’ll do it someday!) I just went with something that I felt was loud and obnoxious enough, in tune with the fight Mario and Sonic were having. I almost threw in a hot pink but settled for the orange that you see. The green background in the progress animation below was just a placeholder.

Not much else to say really. This is going to be my last coloring piece for a while because I’ve kinda neglected my comic-in-progress and I need to get back to doing that full time.
