San Diego Comic-Con = San Diego Capcom-Con

Despite being arguably the biggest comic convention on the planet, this year’s San Diego Comic Con brought little in the way of goods in terms of comic book news (except for perhaps Whedon on Avengers but that’s movies anyway). Capcom however, was unabashed in professing its love for fighting games and had some of the greatest announcements at the convention.
Here’s the recap:
Street Fighter X Tekken AND Tekken X Street Fighter:
I’ll admit, I’m probably first in the “dislikes Tekken” line but I can’t help but be a little excited about this. The fact that two games (!) are coming out, one by Capcom and one by Namco, brings sweet memories of the Capcom and SNK versus deal (though that didn’t result in any good games arguably) and I’m curious as to just how much these two games will differ. The fact that Capcom is recycling the SFIV/SSFIV engine and models sours their side of the bargain a little but what Namco will do with their own game is still completely up in the air (fireballs in the Tekken engine?). I do wish they hadn’t limited themselves to just the Street Fighter and Tekken characters though. Oh, and my prediction? Capcom’s game will be infinitely better than Namco’s.
Marvel vs. Capcom 3 character announcements:

First they revealed four new characters to MVC3. No surprises in Dr. Doom and Chun Li and, as much as I love me some Devil May Cry, I thought Dante was more than enough to represent that franchise so I wasn’t blown away by the inclusion of Trish. But Kl’rt? The Super Skrull? Awesome. I’ve waxed poetic on the subject before (short version: you put Super Skrull in the game and you completely erase the need for any of the Fantastic Four members because HE HAS ALL THEIR POWERS!) and even though his inclusion had been strongly rumored since very early on, I’m thrilled to see it become official. But that wasn’t all. About day later they reveal both Thor (in glorious Oliver Coipel threads) and Amaterasu (I have no love for Okami as a game but I do love the aesthetics of it and, of course, Ms. Sun Goddess herself) much to the delight of many, many people. Also, in one of the new trailers there’s a silhouette that looks remarkably like Vewtiful Joe and that’s pretty badass right there. The roster for this game is looking better and better with each new batch of characters they reveal and I can’t wait to see where they go next.
Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike Online Edition:

Despite big balance issues, 3rd Strike gets my vote for best fighting game ever made. People have been clamoring for an online edition of this game for what seems like forever and Capcom seems to have finally wisened up and is delivering just that. Ono claims the game is still ways off but the prospect of tier adjustments and playing this game on a console with the possibility of GGPO-enabled online is enticing to say the least. Just one request please: Leave the sprites alone. 3rd Strike sprites are unmatched to this day and I can’t bear the thought of them undergoing what Super Turbo sprites did with HD Remix. You can’t fix perfection, Capcom.
Two new characters in Super Street Fighter IV:

With the release of SSFIV on the arcades comes news that two new fighters will be joining the fray. Even better are the rumors that those two characters might be Alex and Rolento who are both pure badasses and personal choices for characters that I would’ve liked to have seen in Super when that was first announced. They revealed new costumes and stuff but my main concern is, naturally, how these new characters will be delivered to console users. It seems like two entire new characters might be somewhat of a stretch for a regular title update and it’d be a shame if the online community gets split if it’s released as paid DLC (which I’d totally buy anyway). We’ll see how this goes. I’m potentially more interested in what balance changes the arcade version will have, if any.
No Darkstalkers announcement (yet?) but my fighting game appetite is more than satiated at this point.
