Spider-Man Z
Another week, anotherĀ SKRATCHJAMS entry.
The challenge this week was to re-envision Spider-Man as a Dragonball Z, Naruto or One Piece character. I have utmost affection for DBZ (and none for the other two) so the decision was clear.
DBZ character designs tend to have very loose clothing and that just didn’t sit right with me for someone as flexible as Spider-Man so I gave him a tweaked version of the more form-fitting Saiyan outfit. Also, because Spidey’s face is covered (and, to me, Spider-Man IS the mask so I couldn’t take it away), I decided to throw in Mary Jane in there so I could have a “Toriyama face” in the piece. I drew heavy inspiration from Bulma for Mary Jane (the MJ on her t-shirt is my favorite part) and I kinda prefer how she turned out over Spider-Man.
As far as the background goes, well, I’ve been toying with the idea of using a photo background for a future Spider-Man piece and once this came up I decided to give it a shot. I don’t think it quite works together as well as I would’ve liked (the Spider-Man piece would’ve had a much softer and realistic rendering style) but I kinda dig how it turned out.
