I started this sketchbook way back in October of 2010 and, about a month ago, I finally completed its final page. I was filling pages at a good pace and was aiming to have it completed by early fall ’11 but, as it inevitably seems to happen, I was forced to slow down towards the end of the year and I finished it much later than I had originally anticipated.

My newest sketchbook is well underway and I will, of course, be posting scans for it sometime over the next few weeks.

But before that, let’s wave my Orange sketchbook goodbye.

And so ends the Holiday season.

New Year’s is just around the corner and I have two sets of Sketchbook Updates before I actually dive into my current sketchbook (which is looking pretty empty at the moment, I admit). I’ve been very busy over the last few weeks with real life stuff (the good kind thankfully) but, hopefully, after some time in January I’ll be able to get back into drawing all kinds of good stuff.

Because of scanner woes (and just regular ol’ woes as well) it has been literally half a year since I posted scans from my sketchbook. That’s much longer than I would’ve liked but, to be honest, there hasn’t been much activity in the sketchbook front anyway. I aim to change that and this post is just the beginning of the catch up process.

Below are scan of pages dating back to June of 2011. There is figure drawing from the June Drink and Draw in NYC, the usual monster and naked/semi-naked ladies as well as one character from a larger, personal project of mine (bet you can’t guess who it is).

With only a handful of pages left to fill in this sketchbook, these updates will go from monthly to bi-weekly until I catch up with the scans completely. The full set of scans for this sketchbook can be found here.

The weather is finally, FINALLY starting to get nice and that means more time spent drawing at the beach. But not quite yet though and not with this batch which was done mostly in the steely cold interiors of my workplace.

A good set overall but I need to tweak my batch setting in Photoshop because it seems like I’m leaning towards linework as opposed to shading and the levels are getting all screwy because of it.

My tablet has spoiled me.

I’ve been slowing down with my sketchbook so much that I’ve actually caught up with the huge head start I had earlier this year. I like working on the digital stuff but I shouldn’t neglect my sketchbook any further. At the very least, I’ll make sure to have one of these Sketchbook Updates every month as I’ve done in the past.

If there is one thing I want out of my art right now, it would be the ability to be consistent with it.

About a month ago, I was doing what I thought was some pretty good stuff in my sketchbook. No more than two weeks afterwards and I experienced a sudden decline in the quality of my art and it wasn’t limited to my sketchbook either. I started at least 3 coloring pieces that I couldn’t get myself to finish because I thought they were so bad. I think I’m back to normal now and, thankfully, this website is run like a dictatorship so those images will never see the light of day but man, I was getting pretty bummed out for a while.

But anyway, here’s the latest batch of my sketchbook scans. I made a conscious effort to incorporate props in some of these pages.

I also made the thumbnails in all my galleries about 25% bigger so now you can actually see what you’re clicking on. Be sure to check it out.

This website was always meant to primarily showcase my artwork and it dawned on me recently that every time I post something that I’ve done to the front page, it’s always as a very small thumbnail that you have to click on to enlarge. The reason why I do it like that is because I absolutely hate the constant scrolling that many websites force you through and, in view of my more vertically oriented pieces, I choose to put thumbnails instead of full pictures to alleviate similar frustrations in like-minded individuals.

Well, I’ve finally come to realize that it just doesn’t make any sense to do so. Why should regular posts contain header images that are larger than my own stuff? If I want to use this website to show my artwork (as I’ve always intended to), I really need to show my artwork.

And so, new mandates shall be put in place henceforth, I say!

1. Sketchbook updates will contain all scans right on the front page (so no more breaking up posts) and,
2. Illustrations will fill at least 3/4 ths of the entire width of the post box (debating whether to go back and do this for past posts or not).

The page load will probably increase unfortunately but I think this ultimately makes more sense.

Procrastination and my uncanny ability to get easily distracted has resulted in me having to complete what I should have spread out over a couple of months in just a few weeks. The Sketchbook Project was finished on time and I don’t feel like I ever rushed anything in it so that’s something to be proud of, I think. Now I’ve moved on to my entries for the Mega Man Tribute of which I’ve completed one (which I’ll probably hold on to and tweak up to the very last minute because I’m such a wuss) and I’ve started work on my second entry where a lot more work needs to be done. I have four days to do it but I’m pretty confident about getting it done on time. I actually began work on a non-Mega Man related piece just because I needed a break from the character.

And I STILL need to finish editing the B4B Vanquish review which is a shame because there’s a lot to talk about (PSP2 just got announced!) and our Game of the Year episode needs to be recorded soon. Sorry, Mark. Will get to it soon as I can.

This is all like being back in college.

But anyway, there’s no better warm up for these projects than my good ol’ sketchbook.

I dedicated the majority of the last three weeks of my life to it but it’s finally done, my sketchbook is now in the Brooklyn Art Library. It’ll be available for viewing for a few weeks starting on February 19th and it’ll go on tour around the country until late July. Excitement!

Above is a small sampling, a teaser if you will, of some of the pages I did for the sketchbook. I wanted to do something lighthearted and funny while playing around with mediums and styles and I think I accomplished that. It even gets a bit political a couple of times but, hopefully, you’ll be treated to something completely different page after page. It’s undoubtedly going to be both humbling and depressing when I see some of the other 28,000+ entries myself but I’m proud of what I did.

I scanned every page for my future reference (dunno when or if I’ll ever post them) and the Art Library will digitize the sketchbook for you at an extra cost but I urge people to just go down there and check it out themselves if possible. There’s bound to be a lot of cool stuff within those 28,000 entries.

And so another year ends.

This website has changed a lot since the end of last year and I’m sure my whim will bring forth even more changes in 2011 (I already have a new website design in mind that I’d like to run through some people). I like to think of this site as ever evolving but the fact is I’m probably just too indecisive.
